DIY Vigilius Spa Apple & Polenta Body Scrub

24 Feb

We all know an apple a day can keep the doctor away, but it can also keep the wrinkles away!  With it’s acidic properties and thick, fibrous texture, apples make an exfoliating scrub to retexturize the body.  Honey is added to give flexibility to the scrub & polenta as an extra exfoliant.  Here’s our DIY version:

Combine in a bowl

1 Cup Applesauce

1/2 Cup Dry Polenta

3 Tablespoons honey

In the shower: rub onto body (this is a body only scrub) in circular motions, focusing on knees and elbows.  (Place a piece of cheesecloth over drain to stop clogging)  Rinse!  Finish w/your fave lotion.

You can also soak your fingers in it as a pre-manicure softener.

It’s the Great Pumpkin “Mask” Charlie Brown

27 Oct

Because it’s nearly Halloween and it’s also time for #SpaWeekGossip s first Spa Masquerade Ball. . . . I thought it would be fun to share a few of my favorite pumpkin masks with you.  Pumpkin is a popular beauty ingredient as it’s enzymes are effective exfoliators, it contains luster giving anti-oxidants and it smells divine (if not made too sickly sweet!).

Pumpkin Pie Pretty Face Mask

1/2 cup canned or mashed fresh (preferable) pumpkin

1 tsp. cinnamon (only if you’re skin is NOT sensitive)

1/2 tsp honey

1/4 tsp  soy milk

Blend and apply to face – relax for 15 mins.  Using a washcloth run under warm water and wrung til damp, gently pat away mask.

Pumpkin Italiano Hair Heaven

1/2 cup canned pumpkin

1/4 cup full fat yogurt

1 tsp Olive Oil

Blend all ingredients.  Apply from root to tip of hair.  Wrap head in a warm towel.   (Throw towel in dryer immediately before wrapping hair). Relax 30 mins.  Wash thoroughly.

No time to concoct a mask?  Luckily there’s loads of ready made pumpkin pampering pleasures to enjoy.  A few of our favorites:

SpaFlick Friday: Biography HJ Heinz The Ketchup Kings

15 Oct

“To do a common thing uncommonly well brings success”  HJ Heinz

Henry J. Heinz pic courtesy http://www.evancarmichael.com

Tomorrow is Boss’ Day so our Spa Flick features a boss extraordinaire.  If there was ever such a thing as a SpaBoss, HJ Heinz who concocted America’s favorite condiment, ketchup, was it.  Channel surfing I fell into The Ketchup Kings documentary of him on The Biography Channel.  As an entrepreneur myself, I was immediately captivated.

Imagine my amazement, when in describing how Heinz coddled his employees in an almost familial way, I learned that he had onsite fitness and spa facilities for all of his staff!  Wow!  If they had Boss’ Day back then, he would have been crowned king!  Go HJ!

You can watch the movie free in it’s entirety on Biography’s website.

Feel Good Factor:  If you’re feeling blue or worried that you can’t overcome some obstacle, watch The Ketchup Kings.  You will be inspired to give the hurdles the heave ho!

Ketchup is not only our french fry friend, it’s also a hair helper.  If your hair has taken on a green tinge due to swimming in chlorinated water, or a color mishap, ketchup will fix it!  All you do is put ketchup on dry hair, leave 30 mins. then shampoo, condition and style!  Tip:  Use the squeeze bottles for easier application.

Wanna take a stab at HJ Heinz occupation?  Here’s a yummy Charred Tomato & Red Pepper Ketchup recipe from Rachel Ray:

Charred Tomato-and-Red Pepper Ketchup

6 plum tomatoes
1 red bell pepper
1 small onion
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon salt

Preheat a grill to high. Halve and seed 6 plum tomatoes and 1 red bell pepper; halve 1 small onion. Grill, turning once, until softened, about 8 minutes. Transfer to a food processor and puree. Transfer to a saucepan, add 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon salt and bring to a boil over medium-high heat; lower the heat and simmer, stirring, until thickened, about 45 minutes. Let cool.

SpaHome Entertaining: Grilled Cheese and Wine Bar

7 Oct

The Food Network show Man v. Food inspired this idea to elevate your next wine and cheese party. The spa twist is, of course, ours ; )

Instead of cheese cubes and crackers at your next wine party, have a grilled cheese bar to accompany your wine selections. Lay out the fixin’s below, let guests concoct their sandwich and grill. (Just think of all the cubing you’ll avoid!)

If it’s not grill weather, a grill pan allows you to cook multiple ‘wiches for fast prep. Or let your guests grill their own.

Bread –
Rosemary Focaccia

Cheese –
Sharp Cheddar
Blue Cheese

Optional – Go Gourmet! Add a few bowls of fresh herbs & spices to the bar. Try basil, horseradish, garlic, cilantro and/or paprika.

WineBath Favors

Here’s a fun spa way to recycle all those empty Wine Bottles and create inventive guest takeaways:

Buy your favorite bubble bath or bath salts in bulk at Costco or other retailer. WITHOUT RINSING the wine bottle (wine is good for the skin) funnel liquid bubble bath into the bottle and recork.

Print labels from your computer like:

Cooking with Caitlin
Wine Bath
Vintage: (date of party)

& stick over the back label. See guests grin.

PS:  Don’t forget to hang out with us on Monday 1PM PST for Foodies Night In #fni on twitter.  This week’s topic wine and cheese!
