Aqua Shiatsu DIY a la Evian Spa

7 Feb

Shiatsu is often compared to acupuncture without the needles. A rigorous form of acupressure in which pressure from the fingertips stimulates your body’s meridians (energy points) Evian offers it’s own brand of shiatsu while you are submersed in a pool of water.

Here are a few products and ideas to turn your next bath into a virtual Aqua Shiatsu session:

Do it Yourself

Feeling ambitious? Buy the book: Do It Yourself Shiatsu considered the bible of self practice. Master the techniques while you’re watching TV or relaxing then try it in the bath!

Aquasense Massage Mat from WalMart

Aquasense Massage Mat

Super simple to use and a bargain less than $18, the Aquasense Mat has massage zones with unique textures for each zone. Pop it into the tub, lay down and rev up your circulation.

Conair Thermal Massage Mat

A little slice of shiatsu for your soak

The Conair Thermal Massage Mat fully padded mat offers stimulating allover bubbles. The neck rests on an adjustable massaging pad, and moving down the mat, a dual back massager calms tight muscles and relaxes the spine.

Music

For Aqua Shiatsu ambiance pop this Shiatsu music compilation into your (watersafe) CD player.

Make Flavored Spa Water Infusions: Water Cocktails!

5 Feb

Plain water is a thing of the past

At Evian’s Spa, their programs offer a different herbal water each day.  The idea is that different herbs have unique restorative properties and complement the spa treatments prescribed for each step of their guests’ health and beauty transformations.

We love this because let’s face it, plain water for many of us is so boring and we have trouble getting our 8 glasses a day.  That’s why we shared the Spa Water Infusion ideas below with our eHow audience.  Enjoy!  Once you try our versions, get creative and make your own water cocktails.

Hair, There, Everywhere #SpaWeekGossip Recap

21 Oct

Things got a bit “un”hairy this week – due to the amazing advice for follicle freedom from special guest expert @CompletelyBare Spa and our chatters. Bikini, legs, pits and face hair – beware!

Wax On, Wax Off. . . waxing is the number one way to smooth our beautiful selves. Advice from seasoned waxers to those a bit scared of the pain? Take Tylenol before waxing & don’t go when Flo’s visiting. @SpaWeek’s advice? Have a sip of vodka! Then reduce redness and inflammation with a cool compress.

The absolute worst way to lose it? Nair! Reeking chemicals are so anti-spa.

Most lemmed for spa stubble stopper? Laser hair removal though many are curious about threading too. Check out these Spa Shaving Alternatives

Need a spa or salon to get your smooth on? Faves:

@DyannaSpaNYC
@SalonThreading in NYC
BellePelle in San Francisco
Spa Bella in Wichita Falls
@WooNashville in Atlanta

Meanwhile war was waged over the top tweezer. @Tweezerman v. Rubis. What’s your preference? Vote!

#SpaHome hair removal heroines?

@CompletelyBare’s Bikini Bump Blaster
The Bliss Philips Hair Removal System
Rubis & Tweezerman tweezers (Over Pluckers Anonymous here we come!)
The Venus Razor especially the “Spa” edition
Veet is a winner here and in the UK

Next week join us for the first #SpaWeekGossip Halloween Masquerade Ball! We’ll be talking beauty treats. Plus, mask your twitter avatar for a chance to win a #spa treat! Share our invite with your friends!

The Top 5 Tools to Remove Hair at Home

20 Oct

Wherever we don’t want hair it seems to be well. . . there! And while I’d love to try electrolysis, lasers or salon waxing, I often don’t have the time or money so I’ve sought out the BEST ways to take it off at home! Enjoy and please share your own favorites in the comments.

1. Bliss Philips Bikini Perfect

This genius tool combines an epilator and a shaver (awesome way to test out epilation). It’s also a space saving multi-tasker that tames your netherregions but includes attachments to shape your brows and facial hair. If you suffer from ingrown hairs try Bliss’ Ingrown Elimination Pads too.

2. Parissa Warm Wax Hair Removal Kit

As simple as two minutes in the microwave, applying to area, and removing with the included strips. (Or more eco friendly, use Gigi Muslin Strips (washable!) Best of all it doesn’t hurt and includes azulene oil for post wax moisturizing.

SpaHome Tip: To calm inflammation or redness rub an ice cube over the area post wax and take a tylenol before waxing. If hair removal is painful try Gigi Numbing Spray before.

3. Rubis Tweezer

Only the sharpest, most precise, lightweight tweezers ever made. Kiss those stray hairs bye bye!

4. Tria Laser Hair Removal System

While of course not as powerful as an in-spa laser, this handy dandy tool has beauty lovers buzzing. You can’t use it on your face but it will leave your body stubble and hair free for years according to users. Including your underarms.

5. Braun Xpressive Wet & Dry Body System

This epilator has been deemed least painful Yay! And it will keep your extremities bare for at least six weeks. My fave way to keep my legs lovely!

Thank you Hallmark for this week’s topic on Spa Time with Your Sweetie, just in time for Sweetest Day, October 16. And with ubercool manelists @ozsultan and @nandoism on board, you know we’re getting a real man’s perspective too!

We agreed that spa is essential to men’s health just as it is to women’s. So get over your spa shyness guys! It’s not girly to spa! Some of the where and hows of getting your couple time at the spa on Sweetest Day and any day.

Some of the spas our guys love:
Supple Spa in NYC
@RedDoorSpas
One & Only in Los Cabos
Salon de Tokyo NYC
@ChateauElan in Atlanta
Playa Grande in Los Cabos
Villa Semana in Bali
@Royal Palms Hotel
@Laubergedelmar
@MansionPeachtree
Hotel de Arts in Barcelona
& on any beach!

The spa treatment of choice, especially to indoctrinate our spa virgins, was a sports massage. . . but we found out many guys like laser hair removal too! The treatment we think they would love? Facials for razor burn!

Some ways to get him there:
– Promise him golf time
– Take him for fitness services
– Make sure the spa doesn’t put him in a pink spa robe
– Add a facial massage to his haircut

If you can’t get Mohammed to the mountain, bring it to him:

Boffo Brands:
@Zirh
@Kiehls
@Axe (the top brand!)
@Art of Shaving
@Aveda

Music, candles & bath salts help make a ro-MAN-tic spa night for two. How to plan a spa evening at home for him: http://ow.ly/2T19K

Beauty Unplugged

5 Oct

Last week in honor of our Spa Electronica high tech spa chat we shared all kinds of cool gizmos to get your skin glowing in our Electric Beauty article. This week we recommend what you can do without to help save the planet while you primp.

Gorgeous Foot Soaker! from Moroccan Home

Don’t: Electric Foot Baths

Why: Save money on electricity, they are loud (and how relaxing is that?) and really don’t mimic a foot massage – just vibrate you numb.

Instead: Use a metal or glass bowl large enough for your feet. Float flower petals on top of hot water and add salts or aromatherapy oils. Chill. Check out this beautiful bowl from Moroccan Home

Don’t: Leave the Water Running

Why: When you wash your face, your hair or brush your teeth leaving the water on wastes a huge amount of a precious resource.

Instead: Turn the faucet off while you lather up or massage your skin.

Don’t: Waste Beauty Products

Why: In addition to cluttering your vanity & wasting your money, ineffective products mean you’ll only end up throwing them away.

Instead: Sample products at home first with travel sizes or obtaining samples from the store. You can also use companies like Birchbox to buy small sizes. Read reviews of sites like Makeup Alley too. OR

Recycle: Your friends may like items you don’t or give to your daughter or niece for dress up fun.

Don’t: Automate when you can Invigorate

Why: Blindly buying every automatic beauty gadget ends up causing closet overload. Ask yourself Why? before you buy. I nearly recently bought an automatic

Do you really need a lotion roller?

lotion roller. Aside from being plastic, I thought am I really so lazy I can’t rub lotion on myself?

Instead: Do things by hand! It feels good and exerts energy – almost a mini workout!

I hope this has inspired you to make your beauty routine a bit more green!  Share and learn more great ideas at our Eco Spa Tweetchat on Twitter Wednesday, October 6 at 11 AM PST.

Electric Beauty – Spa Appliances

29 Sep

Jane Jetson had great skin – either it was the stressless pushbutton housekeeping OR I’m betting she had instant skincare too. And so do we! Thanks to research and technological advances, many spas are increasingly incorporating machines that do everything from killing cellulite to fading freckles.

But what about the home version? Are they really just toys or jump up for joys? A few of these Makeover Machines:

Clarisonic – Before the Clari as I call it, came along, the only thing ultrasonically cleaned in my home was my jewelry. Now AM/PM use of the ultrasonic skin smoother shakes my pores clean, my creams are absorbed quicker and my skin glows just like my gems.

No!No! Home Hair Removal – Despite the disconcerting smell of burning hair (you get used to it), this little miracle worker hurts less than epilation and keeps me fuzz free for weeks. And what grows back is getting sparser. This tips are pricey, but you can

buy in bulk.

Heated Eyelash Curlers – I’ve seen versions of these from Sephora to drugstores and they scare me. Reviewers have said the heat can break fragile lashes and the curl is meh. I’d steer clear.

Artemis Woman Heel SmootherPedicure pleasure! This sander (with nail filing attachments as well) smoothes my feet better than a pedicure. If Home Depot sold beauty tools – this would be a top item.

Evis MD Platinum Anti-Aging Red Light Therapy – Firmer skin and fainter freckles? Yes I get these benefits as do others with this handy dandy red light. It does add about 10 mins to your beauty routine. But worth it if you can’t afford or get to the spa for light therapy.

Temptu Spray On Foundation. This little tool claims to be the air brush for DIY makeup artists. The jury’s still out on this one as I haven’t tried it yet, but I hear it’s excellent.
