Blue Marble Spa at Mission Bay Hyatt is Eco Friendly!

Think spagoing and beauty are indulgent pastimes of the young and wasteful? Wrong! Spagoers are among the greenest folks I know. After all, we’re being proactive in our health so why wouldn’t we do the same for the earth. Besides, we could be engaged in consumer centric behavior like shopping!

The question is how can we enjoy our spa pleasures and home beauty rituals all while being kind to Mother Nature? And what products are organic and chemical free (and can be gotten without hugging a tree?)

So grab your granola and join us for this week’s #SpaWeekGossip as we talk:

– The ways spas are going lean and green (and where to save green by indulging in $50 treatments during Spa Week)
– How to nurture your nirvana au natural
– Organic lotions and potions that save the planet and our pusses

Yolanda Aguilar Beauty Institute & Spa LA

16 Sep

Spa Week sent me on a mission to Yolanda Aguilar Beauty Institute & Spa in Los Angeles for our weekly #SpaWeekGossip parties and I gladly accepted.

YA Beauty Institute and Spa is in the financial district and I can’t think of a better spot for a gem of a spa. YA specializes in skin rejuvenation – sort of a medical spa with a luxury feel. While relaxing and pampering are part of the experience, clients expect to leave with their skin visibly improved. Acne, lines, inflammation and discolorations watch out!

Perfect for me, who since moving to LA, has noticed more freckles and a drier visage. Yolanda, who has been in the beauty business for 45 years, pays extra special attention to her clients so each treatment is customized. After changing into a robe & slippers, I sipped a cup of green tea and relaxed in YA’s earthy green and fountain filled waiting area.

*Superspagoer secret: You know how they say to look at stylist’s hair at a salon? Check out the skin on the staff at a spa. Every person at YA had lineless, gorgeous skin.

Yolanda retrieved me and welcomed into her office for a consultation which all new guests receive. As I suspected, my skin was dry on the cheeks but oily in the t-zone with some acne (Ick – how embarrassing!) and freckles. Rx?   Her Hydra Facial.

The Hydra Facial uses a high tech machine with several attachments that allow the aesthetician to exfoliate, peel, oxygenate and inject vitamins deep into the skin.

Claudia, my aesthetician, cleansed and exfoliated me. (SpaHome note: she recommends if you wear make up washing twice – once with a milky cleanser, then with a sudsy one). Bumps (read zits) were extracted (the unfun part of a facial), but the foot massage I got during the extractions numbed any discomfort.

Next a gauze mask was applied over a disinfecting gel and a light passed over. Tingled! Then the diamond peel. I was a bit nervous it may hurt, but it felt like sandpaper on my face. Next suctioning cups dispersed a vitamin gel into my pores, then sucked up excess – I felt like I was making my face do sit ups! The finale, a blue light to calm residual redness.

To finish, sunscreen was applied. Wow, babies would be jealous! My face felt tighter, tingled and was a bit pink. But it looked like velvet.

Watch segments of the treatment: Here

BONUS: Yolanda Aguilar is celebrating Spa Week & you can treat your summer ravaged skin for only $50! Less than half of the regular price. Call now Spa Week ends Sunday.

PS: A week after my Hydra Facial, my skin is smoother, brighter and softer. As one of my friends put it last night, you always look good but now you’re glowing from the inside out! Wow! What a huge compliment. Thank you Yolanda, Claudia and the entire staff.

Yolanda developed her own treatment line which I have to try. Will report on that in a month.

Recap: Rant & Rave: Spin the Spa Trend

19 Aug

The second #SpaWeekGossip was your chance to rate Spa Week’s Fall 2010 Spa Trends but. . . we mostly raved. Bashful about your bikini? Bordering on Botox? But had to miss the party?

Review & revel in our scorecard recap (and book these treats at West Coast & Chicago Spa Week spas www.spaweek.com now before the appointments are gone!)

1. Allergy Therapies like Breathe Easy Facials, Sinus Massage & Eucalyptus Steams

RAVE! The Endermolift at Smooth Synergy Spa in NYC de-puffed a Spa Week Daily staffer’s allergy eyes and Sinus Massage helped clear our stuffy heads.

2. Lunchtime Botox

TIE! The needlephobes wavered but wrinkles beware as most partygoers said “Botox?, I’m so there.” Including a walk-in Botox brow lift Needleless Botox was deemed bogus compared to the real thing. Though Art of the Spa still prefers her Frownies

3. Sleeping Therapy & Napping During Treatments

SUPER-RAVE! Naptime anyone? Getting some zzzzz’s during facials, massages and more is on everyone’s love list. Spas are even designing treatments to lull us into slumber like the Meditation Calmquest at Westin Kierland – just $50 during Spa Week. Caveat: No snoring allowed.

4. Lash Extensions

TIE! The lash challenged long for these, though one partier thought they may look “crazy”. @StephinToronto suggests doing extensions before a holiday for low fuss flirtyness. Those blessed with lengthy fringe – wished for lash dye & perms to make a comeback.

5. Beautifying your lady parts w/down-there facials & Vatooing

RAVE! Do you Vattoo? Yes please! Vajazzled and Vatooed we’re more bikini confident! Check out @michellejoni having a “Bikini/Bum Facial” live Art of the Spa suggested prettying privates at home with Betty Beauty dye in fun colors like hot pink.

6. Losing inches in a wink

UBER CRAVES! Colon hydrotherapy, ionithermie if it tightens & tones we are in! Check out how @andrebergermd helped @ladyshark66 lose a few inches.

7. Reiki & 8. Acupuncture

TWO THUMBS UP! Proving the practical side of spa, these treats soothe and heal injuries, calm our nerves and soothe our souls. And acupuncture is also an effective face lifter, no need to be nervous about the needles! If you don’t have time to Reiki at the spa try a self guided version.

9. Seaweed Scrubs, Wraps & Facials

RAVE! Spa treats from the sea we want -more please. So much that we often seek out ANY service that includes this ocean potion. @SpaWeek has loads of lit re treats.

10. Hot & Cold Stone Massage

SPAWEEK IT!    @mychicagosalon recommend H&C massages for detoxing. Our Super Spagoers all want to SpaWeek this one! Great spas like Mezzanine in NYC will offer it during Spa Week.

11. Champissage/scalp massage

RAVE! Though champissage began as a family grooming ritual (Hey Mom are you reading this?) it’s our most longed for massage body part. Heads up! For a scalp tingling experience at home, @ArtoftheSpa suggested Head Trip by The Happy Company.

12. Spa Oxygen facials & Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy

TIE! While some of us think Oxygen Facials are fantastic some gave it the side eye.
What else could we clamor for? An integrative approach to spa treatments that addresses our health and the long-term. RAVE!

SpaWeek Trend to Home: DIY for the Top Fall 2010 Spa Trends

17 Aug

Via our fellow spa worshippers at SpaWeek the top Spa Trends for Fall have arrived.  Because we can’t get to the spa all the time – here are our picks for ways to bring these trends to your SpaHome (in green)! Plus ones to NEVER try at home.

1)      Fighting Allergies
Sinus massages, breathe-easy facials and cold & flu bath salts are just a few of the spa services you’ll be seeing just in time to soothe your seasonal allergies. Treat your immune system and clear your sinuses in the spa with new treatments using Eucaplyptus, humidifiers and Lymph drainage

The world’s hippest humidifier, the Crane Cool Mist Humidifier looks stylin’ and keeps your head clear while preventing dried out skin & nasal passages. Put a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil on the lip at the top for aromatherapy. It’s portable enough to take from bedroom to living room too.

2)      Bikini Glamour
Treatments are quickly emerging to pamper your private parts: Bikini Facials give the same attention down there as a esthetician would to your face: toner, extractions and masks included. Also, rituals such as Airbrush painting and Vattooing are now the latest in vaginal adornment.

Prefer to keep your private parts, well, private? Betty Beauty Charmcils let you add panache in peace. And for normal maintenance, Bliss Bikini Perfect is is ideal quick and painless hair removal at Sephora.

3)      Sleeping and Dreaming
Insomniac? A good night’s slumber with proper REM cycles can be just as rejuvenating as a spa treatment, so one of the hottest trends emerging in the industry is a dream-worthy mix of the two to promote better sleeping patterns.

At Peace Media’s Power Nap Kit will make the cat jealous! Short naps are a productivity tool used by executives (& cats) everywhere. You can harness this with Power Nap‘s voice guided nap sessions.  A good eye mask doesn’t hurt either!

4)      Lash Extensions
Eyelash length, thickness, volume and darkness have gone way up on the beauty priority lists of women now more than ever.

Lash extensions are too tricky to try su casa – if you can’t make it to the spa, try Talika Lash Extencils – easily applied in a mascara form, it lengthens & thickens your eyelashes & brows.

Need instant results? False lashes can’t be beat see a simple how to video in our Facebook Lounge

5)      Instant Inch Loss
Remember that magical, completely safe instant weight-loss pill you always dreamed of? We’re not saying it’s been invented (sorry), but the spa is becoming a go-to place to get instant, (almost) magic-like results in addition to providing long term benefits. Colon Hydrotherapy is becoming more popularand med-spa services like the 7E Treatment and Ionithermie give immediate results by targeting muscles with waveform technology.

Do not try this at home – if you can’t get to the spa drink lots of water (it flushes toxins and bloating) and exercise.

6)      Reiki and Energy Work
Turn your trip to the spa into a journey for the soul. Energy work and holistic healing deliver health benefits ranging from injury recovery to spiritual growth.

There are several Reiki dvds for home use. I like this Remove Psychic Debris one. Makes me visualize getting rid of the junk in my head.

7)      Acupuncture

The granddaddy of healing is suddenly making a resurgence. The World Health Organization advocates the use of acupuncture to treat over 40 conditions, from anxiety and other stress syndromes to musculoskeletal pain and injury,

Acupressure is a home alternative to the needles. The ultimate at home tool is this Himalaya Acupressure Mat – it has over 8,230 pressure points. Just a 10 minute lie down on it energizes your whole body – 20 mins. for deep relaxing.

8)      Botox on-the-go
Pick up dry cleaning, get Botox, grab lunch… what? Yes, the age-defying treatment has become so mainstream that spas are now offering it hassle-free, and even appointment-free.

Needles & novices don’t mix. Though the results are not as intense as botox, I love good old school Frownies. Yes they look like envelope corners – but they really help relax your face – especially the dreaded 11’s. Just wear them sans company ; )

9)      Hot AND Cold Stone Massages
Instead of using all hot stones, this treatment includes the application of cold stones as well. Alternating the hot and cool stones helps every cell in the body receive more oxygen and nutrients and encourages a more effective removal of toxins.

Try this easy home stone treatment:

Buy smooth stones like these basalt massage ones, heat half in a crockpot & put the other half in the fridge.

Prep: Lay on your back on a yoga mat, with cold & hot rocks in separate bowls. Place a hot stone on your forehead, at the base of your neck, your stomach & place one under each knee. Relax 10 mins. Change out stones with cold ones, Relax.

10)   Champissage
Also known as Indian head massage, Champissage has been practiced for more than 1000 years in India and has now been interpreted as a custom ritual at many spas.

A good scalp massage is hard to get at home, but for a little lift – use Kiehl’s Scalp Massage Oil paired with the Happy Company Head Trip Head Paradise!

11)   Everything Seaweed
Seawater and seaweed have similar mineral contents with approximately the same percentage as the human body. Seaweed wraps help detoxify the body, eliminate excess fluids, increase blood circulation and regulate hormonal levels.

Beauty through Balance’s Signature Series is made with Glacial Clay & Pacific Organic Seaweed. Try your own spa body wrap exfoliating with their Green Tea Seaweed Salt Glow, followed by the ubersoftening Seaweed Body Butter & Glacial Revitalizing Mist to finish.

12)   Simply… Oxygen

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy dissolves oxygen in the blood plasma and all body cells, tissues and fluids at up to 10 times normal concentration—high enough to sustain life with no blood at all. Oxygenating facials are also increasing in popularity.

This one is super easy, just go outside and breathe! It always clears my brain fog!

Don’t forget to come and give your Rants & Raves on fall’s spa trends at our SpaWeekGossip on Wednesday.  A huge thanks to Spa Week for letting us reprint their trends and don’t forget SpaWeek is coming soon your chance to try all these goodies & more for only $50.
