Haunted Spas

1 Nov

Put the Boo! in beautiful at these spooky spas that have all been rumored to be haunted. Maybe the ghosts are looking for a little body work?

1. 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa, Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Sci Fi Channel’s Ghost Hunter show can’t be wrong! One of the most haunted hotels in the world, dark spots, floating visions and the ghost of a construction worker who fell to his death during the construction of the hotel.

But, who cares about a ghost when you can relax at the hotel’s New Moon Spa? Try the Pure Focus Facial Massage!

2. Safety Harbor Resort and Spa Safety Harbor Florida

Considered Florida’s first spa, Safety Harbor’s founder Dr. Baranoff’s presence has been said to felt during a massage.   Salt shakers have mysteriously disappeared from the restaurant (bad for the body you know!) Plus, 2 people said they were bitten by a dog statue. Via http://starkimages.homestead.com/safetyharborspa.html

Sleep right through those hauntings, try their Lavender Dreams spa duet – an Espiritu Springs Mineral Bath & Lavender Dreams Ultimate Experience

3. Hilton Hawaiian Village, Honolulu, Hawaii

HHV is the home of Mandara Spa, the largest spa in Waikiki. In 1959, an employee saw a woman in a red dress vanish before his eyes as he was escorting her to a room. Some say she is the ghost of a woman murdered in a tower room, while others say she is none other than the volcano goddess herself, Madame Pele.

Volcano Goddess or not, emerge as a goddess from Mandara, after indulging in their Hot Stone Therapy which incorporates volcanic Basalt stones in the massage!

4. Claremont Hotel & Spa Berkely, CA

A little girl who died in the hotel is said to haunt the fourth floor with her friendly apparition. via www.realhaunts.com

Maybe she needs a spa day? Their Anti-Gravity facelift would be perfect!

5. The Langham Hotel & Spa, London

Though 5 ghosts have been seen here, the main one is the ghost of a doctor who committed suicide at the hotel after murdering his new wife on his honeymoon. via NatGeoAdventure

Visit the hotel’s Chuan Spa to balance the yin and yang out of that ghost. The spa opens in Jan. 2011.

SpaFlick Friday: Biography HJ Heinz The Ketchup Kings

15 Oct

“To do a common thing uncommonly well brings success”  HJ Heinz

Tomorrow is Boss’ Day so our Spa Flick features a boss extraordinaire.  If there was ever such a thing as a SpaBoss, HJ Heinz who concocted America’s favorite condiment, ketchup, was it.  Channel surfing I fell into The Ketchup Kings documentary of him on The Biography Channel.  As an entrepreneur myself, I was immediately captivated.

Imagine my amazement, when in describing how Heinz coddled his employees in an almost familial way, I learned that he had onsite fitness and spa facilities for all of his staff!  Wow!  If they had Boss’ Day back then, he would have been crowned king!  Go HJ!

You can watch the movie free in it’s entirety on Biography’s website.

Feel Good Factor:  If you’re feeling blue or worried that you can’t overcome some obstacle, watch The Ketchup Kings.  You will be inspired to give the hurdles the heave ho!

Spa

Ketchup is not only our french fry friend, it’s also a hair helper.  If your hair has taken on a green tinge due to swimming in chlorinated water, or a color mishap, ketchup will fix it!  All you do is put ketchup on dry hair, leave 30 mins. then shampoo, condition and style!  Tip:  Use the squeeze bottles for easier application.

Snack

Wanna take a stab at HJ Heinz occupation?  Here’s a yummy Charred Tomato & Red Pepper Ketchup recipe from Rachel Ray:

Charred Tomato-and-Red Pepper Ketchup

6 plum tomatoes
1 red bell pepper
1 small onion
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon salt

Preheat a grill to high. Halve and seed 6 plum tomatoes and 1 red bell pepper; halve 1 small onion. Grill, turning once, until softened, about 8 minutes. Transfer to a food processor and puree. Transfer to a saucepan, add 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon salt and bring to a boil over medium-high heat; lower the heat and simmer, stirring, until thickened, about 45 minutes. Let cool.

Give Your Guy a Sweetest Day Spa at Home Treat!

13 Oct

Stuck for Sweetest Day ideas for the guy who has it all? How about a spa treatment? This ultimate masculine spa evening offers relaxation, indulgence and togetherness. Sweet!

The Invite

Mail your sweetheart an invitation to dinner (or slip it into his briefcase) Request an RSVP.

The Nibbles

Make sure food selections can be kept warm during spa time, so there is an uninterrupted flow to the evening. If you order in, ask the restaurant to bring food in heat safe containers.

Don’t forget beverages and fresh fruit as pre-spa starters. Drink choices include water infusions . . . but a bottle of wine or a pitcher of his fave cocktail or beer may help him relax.

The Present

Buy your guy a robe and slippers. Create and print a “Menu” listing spa treatments and dinner. Place the menu on top of the robe and slippers and wrap.

Set up the Spa

Prepare pitchers of drinks, gather candles (woodsy scents like pine lend masculine appeal) and music.

Create a nook by moving living room chairs next to the sofa to create an L shape. Cushion the floor, layering blankets, quilts, sleeping bags and sheets. Lean pillows around the edge and on the floor for seating – bed pillows, throw pillows, sofa cushions, floor cushions work great.

Use a low coffee table or trays set to the side for treatment supplies, beverage, snacks and candles.

Twenty minutes before his arrival warm the oil and water, dim the lights, set up the music and light candles.

Spa Treatment Ingredients
12 – 14 Smooth flat stones a bit bigger than a quarter (from outside or a craft store) soaking in a bowl of warmed apricot oil (warm in the microwave 10 secs at a time)(option – add 2 drops of pine or cedarwood essential oil)
Cotton pads
2 Bowls of warm water
Toner (use your own, just don’t tell him)
Moisturizing (non-hardening) face mask
a stack of hand towels

The Spa Treatments

When he arrives, give him his gift. Pour him a beverage. Surprise! It’s a spa night! Have him remove his shoes and socks and put on his slippers. Optional: Ask him to put on the robe. Proceed with selected treatments & food at your own pace. Here’s a mélange of DIY masculine indulgences:

Hands Down

Sit across from him, taking one of his hands palm up. Holding a pebble from the oil, rub the stone in circles radiating from the middle of the palm out, then stroking it along his fingers. Turn the palm over and rub with your fingertips in the same pattern. Place one pebble between the spaces of his fingers & wrap the hand in a towel. Repeat on the other hand. Let him relax for 10 minutes. Remove the towel and stones rubbing in excess oil.

Romance alert: While his hands are “tied” is an excellent time to feed him fruit or beverages.

Scalped

Using the oil from your fingers to massage his scalp. Beginning at the hairline, vigorously knead as if you were making bread. Next, gently pull his hair to stimulate circulation. Finish by squeezing the edges of his ears from the lobe along the outer rim upwards.

Brave Face

Arrange the thickest cushions on the floor in a “bed” and have Mr.-Blissed-Out-By-Now lay face up. Wet a cotton pad with water and clean his face and neck. Rub a stone horizontally across his forehead. Then press your fingers along the bone that encircles the eyes (the orbital bone), stoke from his chin up the cheeks and press your palms against his cheeks, then stoke from his collarbone up the neck. Apply toner to his face and neck. Spread the mask over the face and neck, placing a damp cotton pad over eyes.

BodyRock

While the face mask sets, place the pebbles between his toes a la Hands Down above. Massage his calves and feet for 15-20 minutes. Whether he’s robed or not also makes a difference. When you’re finished, use a warm cotton pad to clean the face mask off.

The treatment series can take as long as you like, feel like extending the hand massage? Go for it! Have dinner & enjoy the rest of your Sweetest Day evening.

PoetrySpa: Happy the Man

13 Oct

This poem gives me a spa-rk of energy when I’m feeling unmotivated:

Happy the Man by John Dryden

John Dryden a Happy poet!

Happy the man, and happy he alone,
He who can call today his own
He who, secure within, can say,
Tomorrow do thy worst, for I have lived today

Be fair or foul or rain or shine
The joys I have possessed, in spite of fate, are mine.
Not Heaven itself upon the past has power,
But what has been, has been and I have had my hour.

SpaFlick Friday: Mamma Mia

8 Oct

Screen

With Sweetest Day next week, this week’s flick pays kudos to the Greek Goddess of sex and love, Aphrodite. In Mamma Mia an impending wedding turns into a tour de force when the bride to be invites her 3 possible dads.

First the breathtaking Greek island of Skopelos (where the movie was filmed) provides a virtual vacation (as do the catchy Abba tunes). Then Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried‘s characters drink water from a natural spring which legend says was Aphrodite’s elixir of youth and beauty.

Spa

Given that Aphrodite rose from the wave’s of the sea, how about a face mask that combines seaweed and Greek yogurt.

Blend 3 TBSP of seaweed powder (available at health food stores and Amazon) into 1/2 c. full fat Greek yogurt. Add 1 capsule Vitamin E. apply to face/hands relax for up to 30 minutes. Gorgeous skin!

Snack

Green Goddess Popcorn

Pop 3 oz of popcorn (1 bag of microwave popcorn), then blend the following spices and shake or stir into the popcorn. Dip into the non fat yogurt. Seriously try it. You’ll like it.

2 TBSP packed chopped fresh dill

2 TBSP packed chopped fresh basil

2 TBSP chopped green chives

1 TBSP chopped fresh mint

Hot pepper flakes to taste

Bowl of Greek yogurt for dipping

Spa Flick Friday: Shallow Hal

1 Oct

Screen:

What if people saw you from the inside out? WAIT, this is not a gory Halloween horror Spa Flick. I mean saw you for your character, personality, soul, the real you. Well that’s exactly what happens in this week’s Spa Flick Shallow Hal.

Jack Black stars with a thin (and then not so thin) Gwyneth Paltrow. Jack’s character is a womanizer who will only date supermodels. But, something happens and suddenly he no longer sees people’s outer beauty, only their inner beauty. Lots of confusion, fun and, make no mistake, heartwarming ensues. Really a spa flick guys and gals will love.

Though it’s message may be trite – it’s also soo right – True Beauty comes from the Inside now that’s a mental makeover we can all get on board with.

Spa:

With a film selection that goes more than skin deep, how about a spa treat that does as well? Take a few minutes after the movie and meditate. Sit quietly and think: What makes you tick? Most happy? What are you grateful for today? This week? You’ll emerge as serene and soothed as if you’ve just had a stone massage.

Sip:

Gwyneth’s character is from an old Irish family in Shallow Hal. So how’s about a Guiness? Only 90 calories a serving and packed with iron. Probably the closest thing to a healthy beer. Cheers!

SpaFlick Tuesday: You Again

22 Sep

Need a girl’s night out?  Does your daughter have the back to school blahs?  Grab them all and treat them to You Again this Friday.  It’s one hilarious Spa Flick that will leave you as glowing and happy as a fresh massage.

Ironically, thanks to my high school friend who is now a movie producer, I had the awesome opp to go to the cast and crew screening at the historic El Capitan Theater in Hollywood.

Armed with a script dripping with a geek’s wisdom and a cheerleader’s perkiness, You Again answers the question:  What if your high school arch nemesis was marrying your brother?  And her Aunt was your Mom’s high school rival?

Based on the screenwriter’s real life familial antics, director Andy Fickman transforms the pain us late bloomers called high school and into a hilarious heart warmer.

Marni former geek turned successful PR exec, goes home for her brother’s wedding.  She discovers SURPRISE! her brother is marrying the girl who made her life hell in high school.  But who seems to have amnesia regarding the whole thing.  Then the bride to be’s aunt turns out to be her Mom’s high school rival.  A comic tour de force ensues as Marni decides to reveal the charade to her brother.

BONUS:  Side splitting performances by spa gals Kristin Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Betty White, Kristin Chenoweth, Odette Yustman & spa guy Victor Garber.

Spa Sightings:

– Mud Bath

– Pea Soup Body Wrap

– A Mom Makeover

The verdict?  You Again ought to be required watching for anyone who is in or went to high school!   I dare you to watch it and not leave smiling.  Better yet, why not invite your high school Frenemy?  BOOK NOW on Fandango before they sell out. Until the next Spa Flick. . .
