Here are a few products and ideas to turn your next bath into a virtual Aqua Shiatsu session:

Feeling ambitious? Buy the book: Do It Yourself Shiatsu considered the bible of self practice. Master the techniques while you’re watching TV or relaxing then try it in the bath!

Make Flavored Spa Water Infusions: Water Cocktails!

5 Feb

Plain water is a thing of the past

At Evian’s Spa, their programs offer a different herbal water each day.  The idea is that different herbs have unique restorative properties and complement the spa treatments prescribed for each step of their guests’ health and beauty transformations.

We love this because let’s face it, plain water for many of us is so boring and we have trouble getting our 8 glasses a day.  That’s why we shared the Spa Water Infusion ideas below with our eHow audience.  Enjoy!  Once you try our versions, get creative and make your own water cocktails.

Degunk your Bunk: Five Fall Eco SpaHome Housekeeping Rituals for Stellar Skin

22 Sep

The first day of fall is upon us. And not far behind, winter. Most of us will be staying inside more and enduring the dying effects of heating systems. Not to mention the dirt & dust from summer residing inside our home.

Though we all hear of spring cleaning – is fall dirtening?  Not! Try these five tips to prime your palace for indoor living that’s soft on skin:

1. De-bunny heating vents.

Gross, I know – but dust bunnies often gather on & in heating units & if you don’t clean them, guess what? That “bunny” may just hop into your pores causing breakouts. Grosser!

Vent filters

How to: Remove vent cover. Wash in warm, soapy water. Vacuum inside of vent, then use a cloth to dust off the slats. (SpaHome Secret: Add essential oil to the water, your room will smell fab for a few weeks after.) Insert a vent filter like these from Home Depot.

2. Fall into the fridge.

You are what you eat. If you want a delicious complexion eat fresh. First get rid of the garbage from fridge & freezer. Pick out the popsicle from the ice cube tray. Compost outdated food.

Think about your fall/holiday plans. Do you want to lose weight? Are you hosting lots of parties? What staples will you need to accomplish your goals?  Make a list and go shopping. SpaHome Food Tip – Include lots of fresh salmon & veg for a fab fall face.

3. Freshen the entry.

Your door symbolizes the gateway to your sanctuary. A dirty, cluttered entry can lead to the same on your face. Ick! Cleanse your door w/vinegar & water & don’t forget the handle. Put away the shoes and other paraphernalia cluttered around it. Get a new doormat.

4. Orchestrate an orchid invasion.

Orchids are one of those plants that clean and add fresh oxygen to the air. Not only are they gorgeous to look at when summer color is fading, but they get rid of toxins and free radicals that age skin.

5. Launder the linens.

What’s next to your skin more than the fabric in our lives? Gather the tablecloths, place mats, sheets, throws and towels that you’ve been using and the ones you plan to use for winter.

Wash them in Anti-Allergen Laundry Detergent from The Ecology Works. It cleans and removes allergens from dust mites, pets, molds and neutralizes odors. Best of all it’s plant-based and eco-friendly.

What are some of your favorite fall cleaning rituals?  Share with us in the comments below.

SpaWeek Trend to Home: DIY for the Top Fall 2010 Spa Trends

17 Aug

Via our fellow spa worshippers at SpaWeek the top Spa Trends for Fall have arrived.  Because we can’t get to the spa all the time – here are our picks for ways to bring these trends to your SpaHome (in green)! Plus ones to NEVER try at home.

1)      Fighting Allergies
Sinus massages, breathe-easy facials and cold & flu bath salts are just a few of the spa services you’ll be seeing just in time to soothe your seasonal allergies. Treat your immune system and clear your sinuses in the spa with new treatments using Eucaplyptus, humidifiers and Lymph drainage

The world’s hippest humidifier, the Crane Cool Mist Humidifier looks stylin’ and keeps your head clear while preventing dried out skin & nasal passages. Put a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil on the lip at the top for aromatherapy. It’s portable enough to take from bedroom to living room too.

2)      Bikini Glamour
Treatments are quickly emerging to pamper your private parts: Bikini Facials give the same attention down there as a esthetician would to your face: toner, extractions and masks included. Also, rituals such as Airbrush painting and Vattooing are now the latest in vaginal adornment.

Prefer to keep your private parts, well, private? Betty Beauty Charmcils let you add panache in peace. And for normal maintenance, Bliss Bikini Perfect is is ideal quick and painless hair removal at Sephora.

3)      Sleeping and Dreaming
Insomniac? A good night’s slumber with proper REM cycles can be just as rejuvenating as a spa treatment, so one of the hottest trends emerging in the industry is a dream-worthy mix of the two to promote better sleeping patterns.

At Peace Media’s Power Nap Kit will make the cat jealous! Short naps are a productivity tool used by executives (& cats) everywhere. You can harness this with Power Nap‘s voice guided nap sessions.  A good eye mask doesn’t hurt either!

4)      Lash Extensions
Eyelash length, thickness, volume and darkness have gone way up on the beauty priority lists of women now more than ever.

Lash extensions are too tricky to try su casa – if you can’t make it to the spa, try Talika Lash Extencils – easily applied in a mascara form, it lengthens & thickens your eyelashes & brows.

Need instant results? False lashes can’t be beat see a simple how to video in our Facebook Lounge

5)      Instant Inch Loss
Remember that magical, completely safe instant weight-loss pill you always dreamed of? We’re not saying it’s been invented (sorry), but the spa is becoming a go-to place to get instant, (almost) magic-like results in addition to providing long term benefits. Colon Hydrotherapy is becoming more popularand med-spa services like the 7E Treatment and Ionithermie give immediate results by targeting muscles with waveform technology.

Do not try this at home – if you can’t get to the spa drink lots of water (it flushes toxins and bloating) and exercise.

6)      Reiki and Energy Work
Turn your trip to the spa into a journey for the soul. Energy work and holistic healing deliver health benefits ranging from injury recovery to spiritual growth.

There are several Reiki dvds for home use. I like this Remove Psychic Debris one. Makes me visualize getting rid of the junk in my head.

7)      Acupuncture

The granddaddy of healing is suddenly making a resurgence. The World Health Organization advocates the use of acupuncture to treat over 40 conditions, from anxiety and other stress syndromes to musculoskeletal pain and injury,

Acupressure is a home alternative to the needles. The ultimate at home tool is this Himalaya Acupressure Mat – it has over 8,230 pressure points. Just a 10 minute lie down on it energizes your whole body – 20 mins. for deep relaxing.

8)      Botox on-the-go
Pick up dry cleaning, get Botox, grab lunch… what? Yes, the age-defying treatment has become so mainstream that spas are now offering it hassle-free, and even appointment-free.

Needles & novices don’t mix. Though the results are not as intense as botox, I love good old school Frownies. Yes they look like envelope corners – but they really help relax your face – especially the dreaded 11’s. Just wear them sans company ; )

9)      Hot AND Cold Stone Massages
Instead of using all hot stones, this treatment includes the application of cold stones as well. Alternating the hot and cool stones helps every cell in the body receive more oxygen and nutrients and encourages a more effective removal of toxins.

Try this easy home stone treatment:

Buy smooth stones like these basalt massage ones, heat half in a crockpot & put the other half in the fridge.

Prep: Lay on your back on a yoga mat, with cold & hot rocks in separate bowls. Place a hot stone on your forehead, at the base of your neck, your stomach & place one under each knee. Relax 10 mins. Change out stones with cold ones, Relax.

10)   Champissage
Also known as Indian head massage, Champissage has been practiced for more than 1000 years in India and has now been interpreted as a custom ritual at many spas.

A good scalp massage is hard to get at home, but for a little lift – use Kiehl’s Scalp Massage Oil paired with the Happy Company Head Trip Head Paradise!

11)   Everything Seaweed
Seawater and seaweed have similar mineral contents with approximately the same percentage as the human body. Seaweed wraps help detoxify the body, eliminate excess fluids, increase blood circulation and regulate hormonal levels.

Beauty through Balance’s Signature Series is made with Glacial Clay & Pacific Organic Seaweed. Try your own spa body wrap exfoliating with their Green Tea Seaweed Salt Glow, followed by the ubersoftening Seaweed Body Butter & Glacial Revitalizing Mist to finish.

12)   Simply… Oxygen

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy dissolves oxygen in the blood plasma and all body cells, tissues and fluids at up to 10 times normal concentration—high enough to sustain life with no blood at all. Oxygenating facials are also increasing in popularity.

This one is super easy, just go outside and breathe! It always clears my brain fog!

Don’t forget to come and give your Rants & Raves on fall’s spa trends at our SpaWeekGossip on Wednesday.  A huge thanks to Spa Week for letting us reprint their trends and don’t forget SpaWeek is coming soon your chance to try all these goodies & more for only $50.

Indulge in Thai Massage Therapy without going to a Spa in Thailand

17 Nov

Happy Monday everyone!  I’ve been a bit under the weather this weekend and didn’t want to keep you waiting.  So Kelly Kilpatrick kindly contributed this post on Thai massage – yes it is available outside of Thailand.  Enjoy!   Candace

Thai massage is a fairly recent newcomer to the American massage therapy market.  It is an ancient massage modality that was imported into Thailand from India and has its roots in both Ayurvedic and Chinese traditional medicines.  The modality was reputedly developed by the actual physician of Buddha himself over 2,500 years ago.

Since those times, Thai massage has undergone several changes, and is now practiced throughout Thailand with distinct variations in regions throughout the country.  Although the Thai government is looking to unify and regulate this ancient massage modality, provincial attitudes remain as to which is the correct expression of the core values and beliefs behind the practice.

There are many things that make Thai massage unique when compared to traditional Western massage modalities.  Participation in Thai massage could be viewed as far more interactive than its counterparts.  Massage patients are fully clothed throughout the entirety of the session, which takes place on a mat on the floor.  Clients are then moved into a variety of yoga-like positions by the therapist and he or she uses their body, including forearms, feet, knees, and hands to apply pressure to various points in the musculature of the client.

owc-massagewaterfallUsing acupressure points in conjunction with deep tissue massage while moving the client into a variety of positions grants many benefits to the client.  Many people feel more centered physically, emotionally, and spiritually after the process.  Increased flexibility and range of motion is experienced by the participant; other benefits such as improved circulation, a decrease in pain, and overall relaxation are also experienced.

For clients, especially those not familiar with massage therapy, Thai massage can evoke mixed emotions.  Some love the interactive nature, positioning and stretching involved in the process and the truly hands-on approach.  Others may simply wish to lie down and relax while their body is worked by a professional.  Obviously if the latter is the case, Thai massage is not what they are looking for.

People who participate in Thai massage come from all walks of life and many go on to learn more about the art of yoga and begin to practice yoga themselves, which only serves to enhance their quality of life.  Thai massage is a great marriage of the healing art of yoga and massage.  If you think Thai massage is something you’d like to try, ask your local spa if they provide this service.

Special thanks to Kelly Kilpatrick our guest writer today.

SpaCandy – Guilt Free Health & Beauty Goodies

27 Oct

With Halloween coming up, the scariest thing I can think of is making it out of the grocery and avoiding all the chocolate and treats calling my name (it is Candy after all!).  How do I resist?  I begin dreaming about one of my favorite chocolate fixes that won’t be mean to my insides like these high sugar and fat evil temptations.

Bissinger’s Spa Chocolate knocks the socks off of your typical trick or treater type fare.  It’s total sensory overload.  As you lift that foiled lid off the assortment, woodsy cocoa aromas drift around you – saying consume consume!

The feel of the chocolate is silkier than my pussycat’s coat – and that’s darn silky!  It’s so soft I’m afraid it will evaporate before I can even pop it into my mouth.   I think the only word that could adequately describe how decadent this stuff tastes is “Scrumpdillyumptious!”  Thanks Mr. Wonka!

Yummy Gummy Pandas - Too Cute to Eat?

Yummy Gummy Pandas - Too Cute to Eat?

In addition to chocolate, another one of their popular spa treats is Green Tea Gummy Pandas, almost too cute to “bear”!  Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Even better, Bissinger’s confections will not compromise your health goals.  Here is what their site says:

“Shed your guilt. Chocolate can have a place in your healthy lifestyle. Research studies show that some of the ingredients in our confections have potential health benefits for cardiovascular health, lowered risk of certain types of cancer and a slowing of the aging process. Nothing’s more gratifying.

Treat yourself. Treat yourself well.

Spa Chocolate should be consumed as part of a balanced diet that includes fruits and vegetables.”

I especially like the eat your veggies bit – like we’d just live off their candies – well, they are low in calories, carbs and have iron, maybe. . . . no I love my broccoli and spinach too much!    Visit Bissinger’s to buy.

See you at the Spa and Happy Halloween, Candy

World Diabetes Day 2008 – Be a BlueBeauty to Bring Diabetes to Light

19 Oct

In 2007, the United Nations marked November 14 as World Diabetes Day – making it an official UN World Health Day.  On this day, the International Diabetes Federation wages a campaign to invoke global diabetes awareness.  This year the focus is on childhood diabetes with aims to:

Increase the number of children supported by the International Diabetes Federation’s Life for a Child Program

Raise awareness of the warning signs of diabetes

Encourage initiatives to reduce diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and distribute materials to support these initiatives

Promote healthy lifestyles to help prevent type 2 diabetes in children

Spa4Diabetes & Children with Type 2 Diabetes

One of Spa4Diabetes (see tab above), main goals is to make health & fitness fun by presenting spa methods for living.  Though we tend to think of Type 2 as an “older persons” problem, the average age of children getting Type 2 is dropping at an alarming rate.  To combat this, Spa4Diabetes makes nutritious eating and regular movement attractive to children.
