SpaDate: #SpaWeekGossip Recap

14 Oct

Thank you Hallmark for this week’s topic on Spa Time with Your Sweetie, just in time for Sweetest Day, October 16. And with ubercool manelists @ozsultan and @nandoism on board, you know we’re getting a real man’s perspective too!

We agreed that spa is essential to men’s health just as it is to women’s. So get over your spa shyness guys! It’s not girly to spa! Some of the where and hows of getting your couple time at the spa on Sweetest Day and any day.

Some of the spas our guys love:
Supple Spa in NYC
@RedDoorSpas
One & Only in Los Cabos
Salon de Tokyo NYC
@ChateauElan in Atlanta
Playa Grande in Los Cabos
Villa Semana in Bali
@Royal Palms Hotel
@Laubergedelmar
@MansionPeachtree
Hotel de Arts in Barcelona
& on any beach!

The spa treatment of choice, especially to indoctrinate our spa virgins, was a sports massage. . . but we found out many guys like laser hair removal too! The treatment we think they would love? Facials for razor burn!

Some ways to get him there:
– Promise him golf time
– Take him for fitness services
– Make sure the spa doesn’t put him in a pink spa robe
– Add a facial massage to his haircut

If you can’t get Mohammed to the mountain, bring it to him:

Boffo Brands:
@Zirh
@Kiehls
@Axe (the top brand!)
@Art of Shaving
@Aveda

Music, candles & bath salts help make a ro-MAN-tic spa night for two. How to plan a spa evening at home for him: http://ow.ly/2T19K

Don’t have a sweetest guy to take to the spa? Then how about your Sweetest friend? For only $50 at SpaWeek spas through this Sunday that’s $100 worth of love!

Pop in next Wed. at 2 PM ET / 11 AM PT when we’ll dish how not to be so “Hairy” unless your last name is Potter!

Give Your Guy a Sweetest Day Spa at Home Treat!

13 Oct

Stuck for Sweetest Day ideas for the guy who has it all? How about a spa treatment? This ultimate masculine spa evening offers relaxation, indulgence and togetherness. Sweet!

The Invite

Mail your sweetheart an invitation to dinner (or slip it into his briefcase) Request an RSVP.

The Nibbles

Make sure food selections can be kept warm during spa time, so there is an uninterrupted flow to the evening. If you order in, ask the restaurant to bring food in heat safe containers.

Don’t forget beverages and fresh fruit as pre-spa starters. Drink choices include water infusions . . . but a bottle of wine or a pitcher of his fave cocktail or beer may help him relax.

The Present

Buy your guy a robe and slippers. Create and print a “Menu” listing spa treatments and dinner. Place the menu on top of the robe and slippers and wrap.

Set up the Spa

Prepare pitchers of drinks, gather candles (woodsy scents like pine lend masculine appeal) and music.

Create a nook by moving living room chairs next to the sofa to create an L shape. Cushion the floor, layering blankets, quilts, sleeping bags and sheets. Lean pillows around the edge and on the floor for seating – bed pillows, throw pillows, sofa cushions, floor cushions work great.

Use a low coffee table or trays set to the side for treatment supplies, beverage, snacks and candles.

 Twenty minutes before his arrival warm the oil and water, dim the lights, set up the music and light candles.

Spa Treatment Ingredients
12 – 14 Smooth flat stones a bit bigger than a quarter (from outside or a craft store) soaking in a bowl of warmed apricot oil (warm in the microwave 10 secs at a time)(option – add 2 drops of pine or cedarwood essential oil)
Cotton pads
2 Bowls of warm water
Toner (use your own, just don’t tell him)
Moisturizing (non-hardening) face mask
a stack of hand towels

The Spa Treatments

When he arrives, give him his gift. Pour him a beverage. Surprise! It’s a spa night! Have him remove his shoes and socks and put on his slippers. Optional: Ask him to put on the robe. Proceed with selected treatments & food at your own pace. Here’s a mélange of DIY masculine indulgences:

Hands Down

Sit across from him, taking one of his hands palm up. Holding a pebble from the oil, rub the stone in circles radiating from the middle of the palm out, then stroking it along his fingers. Turn the palm over and rub with your fingertips in the same pattern. Place one pebble between the spaces of his fingers & wrap the hand in a towel. Repeat on the other hand. Let him relax for 10 minutes. Remove the towel and stones rubbing in excess oil.

Romance alert: While his hands are “tied” is an excellent time to feed him fruit or beverages.

Scalped

Using the oil from your fingers to massage his scalp. Beginning at the hairline, vigorously knead as if you were making bread. Next, gently pull his hair to stimulate circulation. Finish by squeezing the edges of his ears from the lobe along the outer rim upwards.

Brave Face

Arrange the thickest cushions on the floor in a “bed” and have Mr.-Blissed-Out-By-Now lay face up. Wet a cotton pad with water and clean his face and neck. Rub a stone horizontally across his forehead. Then press your fingers along the bone that encircles the eyes (the orbital bone), stoke from his chin up the cheeks and press your palms against his cheeks, then stoke from his collarbone up the neck. Apply toner to his face and neck. Spread the mask over the face and neck, placing a damp cotton pad over eyes.

BodyRock

While the face mask sets, place the pebbles between his toes a la Hands Down above. Massage his calves and feet for 15-20 minutes. Whether he’s robed or not also makes a difference. When you’re finished, use a warm cotton pad to clean the face mask off.

The treatment series can take as long as you like, feel like extending the hand massage? Go for it! Have dinner & enjoy the rest of your Sweetest Day evening.

Live, love and lounge, Candy

SpaFlick Friday: Duel

18 Jun

Screen

Hi Dad (waving) Happy Father’s Day!  This week we’re devoting Spa Flick Friday to one of my Dad’s favorite movies of all time:  Steven Spielberg’s Duel.  It’s easy to see why guys grunt and arrrrgggyyyah at Duel.  Little dialogue, one set, one actor, made for the puny (according to Hollywood standards) budget of $500,000, Spielberg  keeps it simple and goes for the gusto – keeping us guessing at every turn.

Also notable in this tete a tete between a car’s driver & an eighteen wheeler, this is the film that made Steven Spielberg a household word in Hollywood–and for good reason.  Watch it you’ll see.  So grab your Dad (and any other guys that happen to be around) and get ready for some serious adrenaline.  Let me know what you think.

Spa

The road rage is bound to get you both a bit stressed : ), so arm yourselves with a hand exerciser like this one from Theraband to take it out on.  If you don’t have one of these gel or sand filled squeezers – use a tennis ball.

Snack

No popcorn this week – it’s a holiday why not go for your Dad’s favorite pizza.  I like to buy flatbread, brush w/olive oil, cover with sliced tomatoes & fresh mozzarella & feta – then top away.  Bake 1t 375 for about 15 mins.

Sip

Nothing but a beer will do for this adventure.  Something dark just like the film – How bout a Guinness?

Spa wishes, Candy

Spa Fathers Day Picks

18 Jun

Dads are notoriously hard to shop for. . . lucky for us guys are getting into the spa groove more than ever – here are a few of our favorite gifts for their newest past time:

Stoneware Shaving Mug w/Olive Oil Soap and Brush from martisart on Etsy

Natural Spice Body Buff at the Four Seasons Austin – Many spas have treatments just for men and this one’s a doozy – A blend of almond, cinnamon and nutmeg is briskly applied all over the body, leaving the skin smooth, fresh and revitalised.

Monogram Signature Spa Robe from Restoration Hardware

Whiskey Cologne from Portland General Store on Etsy

Bedhead Cobalt Madras Pj’s from Bedhead

And, the grand finale, the Ultimate Guy’s Spa Day:   a swim in the beer pool at Bierschwimmbad in Tarrenz, Austria

Spa wishes, Candy

Nate Berkus: Spa Dude and Designer Extraordinaire

14 Jun

On September 13, 2010, Oprah’s “cutie pie” designer Nate Berkus launches his very own TV show on NBC. It’s about time! In the words of a friend, “He’s my home design hero!” Love that – you know who you are.

In honor of the exciting news, our Twitter pals and HGTV design stars, the MoggitGirls proclaimed today #NateDay. Design bloggers everywhere are paying homage to Nate with their fave designs. How could we refuse?

Mouthwatering makeovers & astronomical adorableness aside, Nate’s design skill is what got him where he is. And, we feel, he’s a kindred SpaHome savant. Just as spa design captivated us – Nate is inspired by his surroundings too.

For instance, one of his favorite hotels, the Soho Grand in New York City, sports striped rugs in rich ivories & chocolates. Now check out Nate’s apartment – look familiar?

The Chicken. . . . (the Soho Grand Hotel in NYC)

or the egg? Nate's apt. from http://www.elledecor.com

And Nate’s no stranger to hospitality design. Just check out the hunter’s lodge vibe he did for Rockit Bar & Grill in Chicago. He used antler chandeliers and real dried tree trunks for cocktail tables. And we hear when he was in Seattle he frequented The Spa at The Woodmark Hotel. Sigh, a savvy designer and a SpaDude to boot!

Rockin the Hunter's Lodge vibe at Rockit Bar & Grill

So why else do we think Nate’s designs are spalicious? Let’s peek at the Chicago townhome of Producer Ellen Rakieten (designed in collaboration with fab designer Anne Coyle) and Nate’s apartment. (Full details at ElleDecor our source for the pics.) as we spell it out:

S is for Stress-free

If anything is the hallmark of SpaHome design it’s anti-stress.  Nate cleverly integrates useful, yet beautiful features into his client’s homes to take the stress right away.  For instance, in Rakeiten’s dressing room he installed silk upholstered wall panels to hold necklaces and mementos.  Preventing the omnipresent dresser jewelry tangle.

He took the same principal to her office, installing a cork wall to hold notes (I would so be using this for brainstorming!), etc.

The producer's office with cork wall to catch all that clutter!

Another destressor is the open walkways Nate plans into each room.  This gives an airy, bright mood.

P is for Playful

Fun objects in unexpected places make us smile and that increases endorphins which make us happy which makes us look ten years younger!  Gotta Love it and Nate is a master of whimsy – using his arsenal of objects sourced from flea markets to fashion houses.

A Leather Pig in Nate's Apt. Bathroom from Liberty of London

A is for Activity

Rooms are made for moving.  Into the producer’s home, Nate created a basketball room complete with backboard and hoop for her two boys.

Love how Nate personalizes rooms for his clients The Basketball Room

H is for Homey

What does homey really mean?  A place that feels like you, that brings your joys and passions out and provides respite from the world is our SpaHome definition.  Rakieten’s library is the epitome of homey a la Nate.  Off black paint by Farrow and Ball, a collage of pictures & intimate seating creates a cozy spot for cuddling up with your favorite novel (or design book!).

The Library - "Grab a book and sit a spell"

O is for Opulent

Like a millionaire in ripped jeans, Nate knows how to go luxe without pretention.  Case in point: Silver leaf wall’s formality is countered with a game board mounted on the wall of Nate’s office

Formal silver leaf wall treatment "foiled" with a funky game board

M is for Mixing

Nate is like the Kitchen Aid Mixmaster of home design.  He takes a little vintage, adds a pinch of flea market, throws in some European and blends in a bit of mod to come up with eclectic rooms that never look cluttered or cramped.

For instance, in Rakieten’s dressing room and bedroom, he sourced two vintage Baguès chandeliers to add cohesion between the two rooms but with a more personal feel than generic overhead fixtures.   Then he kept the rest of the dressing & bedroom, clean, white and bright to emphasize the chandeliers.

The bedroom's chandelier makes a striking focal point

E is for Everyone

What I find most appealing about Nate rooms is while gorgeous to gaze at, they are also super comfy to live in.  His designs invite and engage us to move in them and not through them. And that’s the most Spa Home attitude I know.

Congrats Nate and may you have many spa days to come (you deserve it!).  And once again, don’t forget, the Nate Show premieres September 13.  Be sure to stop by the other design bloggers talking about Nate today check out the list here.

Where Would St. Patrick Spa?

17 Mar

Did you really think I’d forget to give St. Patrick a spa day?  I am half Irish after all!  Plus, the roots of St. Patrick’s Day are in indulging.  It’s origins are said to stem from a day to take a break from Lent, eat meat and rejoice!  And if there was a spa around, I’m sure more than one Irishman soaked his beer saturated body in the jacuzzi.

St. Patrick himself is somewhat of a mystery & it turns out the legend of him banishing snakes from Ireland is a hoax (more on that at history.com).  As the patron saint of a day of indulgence (which sounds an awful lot like a spa day to me!) I couldn’t resist giving him a spa itinerary.

County Kerry

Located in one of the most Irish counties in the Emerald Isle, County Kerry sits the Killarney Plaza Hotel & Spa. One of Ireland’s most picturesque havens, County Kerry’s capital is Tralee home of the world renowned Rose of Tralee & the county itself if bordered by mountains on one side and lakes on the other – County Kerry is to St. Patrick like the North Pole is to Santa.  Where else would he relax?

The Killarney Plaza boasts Ireland’s only true concept Molton Brown spa which has special treats just for the lads perfect for St. P.  It was even voted the Best Hotel in Ireland in 2008.  Here’s what I’d recommend, after a stint in the sauna to sweat out all that alcohol, tend to those saintly hard working hands and feet with:

Desert plant conditioning hand groom

Vitalise your nails, hands and arms. Hands will be soaked, buffed and moisturised while your nails are given a trim, your cuticles are tidied and we treat your hands, palms and arms to a relaxing massage.

Your skin will feel smooth and hydrated and your nails will be in great shape.

* Pre-booking is advised for this therapy       1 hour  15 minutes  €70

Samphire vital foot groom

Recondition your feet, ankles and nails. Your soles and heels will be soaked and polished, while your nails and cuticles are given a shape and tidy. Then relax as you enjoy a hydrating and stress-relieving foot massage. Emerge with smooth, moisturised skin, immaculate cuticles and a revived mood.

Killarney Plaza wishes you a very happy and green St. Patrick’s Day with this animated card & Irish toast:

Our Irish Toast to you…

Seo sláinte an tséitéara, an ghadaí, an trodaí, agus an óltóra!
Má dhéanann tu séitéireacht, go ndéana tú séitéireacht ar an mbás,
Má ghoideann tú, go ngoide tú croí mná;
Má throideann tú, go dtroide tú i leith do bhráthar,
Agus má ólann tú, go n-óla tú liom féin.

If you cheat, may you cheat death.
If you steal, may you steal a woman’s heart.
If you fight, may you fight for a brother.
And if you drink, may you drink with me.

Bring St. Patrick’s Spa Sojourn Home:

Do a femme fatale version of St. Paddy’s mani/pedi with one of the hot green nail polishes like Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Orbis Non Sufficit, Teal or Recycle.

Valentine’s Day Spa Trip Where Would Saint Valentine Spa

14 Feb

According to wikipedia, Saint Valentine refers to twelve martyred Roman saints.  It’s even sketchy as to whether our holiday, celebrates one Saint’s feast or all twelve.  While we can’t pin one down the details of St. V specifically, we know he was at least religious and Roman.  SInce Romans were really into spas – the Romans practically invented the bath & those monk types said that “cleanliness is next to godliness” – we can assume he definitely was into the whole spa experience!

Now that we’ve established these men were “Spa Saints” if any of them were around today, where in Rome would they spa?  If I were a designated love advocate – I would want to go to a retreat with an atmosphere that’s like the church: welcoming, congenial and serene.   Now that I think of it, spas are similar to churches in that hospitality is key.  Well it just happens I have the perfect spa, the Hotel de Russie in Rome.

Located right up the street from the Piazza del Popolo, also known as the People’s Square, Hotel de Russie’s spa better known as the De Russie Wellness Zone strives to be an inviting place for Roman citizens to maintain their health.  So after his spa day, the Saint will have loads of people to counsel only a few minutes away.  Plus there’s lots of PR opps while he spas.

Piazza de Popolo

To begin his day, the Saint can take care of his bodily temple in the De Russie Wellness Zone with his very own personal trainer in a state of the art fitness center.   Plus many of the machines are “robe friendly” such as the treadmill,  After his workout, Saint V can relax in the Saltwater whirlpool bath or sauna.  Though the spa offers Carita based Gentleman’s Day of luxury relaxation & anti-aging treatments, I think the big V would definitely go for the wellness focused treatments for the second half of his day.  For instance:

Repast fit for a Saint at Hotel De Russie's Wellness Zone

A Purifying Facial with essential oils – to up the pious factor of his skin

A Purifying Back Treatment with essential oils – to be sure the devil’s not on his back

A Four Hands Massage to achieve the ultimate in spiritual bliss

Now that Saint Valentine is all spaahed up – I think a lot more matches will be made this Valentine’s Day.

See you at the spa, Candy

The Couple that Spas Together Stays Together

12 Feb

Though spa is often thought of as a solitary endeavor, it is also one that can be shared with loved ones.  In fact,  spaahing is a healthy way to spend some bonding time together away from the stress of daily life.  And with Valentine’s Day upon us – who better to spend a day at the spa with than your sweetheart?

So if you haven’t planned your Valentine’s Day outing yet, there’s still time.  Call your local day & hotel spas and see if they can take a dual appointment.  Discover Spas has an incredible guide to romantic spas too.  Many spas have dual treatment rooms that can accommodate couples so you can bliss out beside each other.

If you’re really lucky you may have a spa devoted to only couples nearby.  For instance, La Petite Retreat Day Spa in Los Angeles.

Typically, “the” couples treatment is a massage.   But why stop there?

Some other ideas for side by side treatments are:

– Manicures (men don’t worry you don’t have to have polish)

– Baths – mud, champagne or otherwise inspire happiness

– Couples or partner yoga class – really get closer

Romantic Recession-Proof Spashionista.  If you can’t get to the spa consider some at home DIY versions:

– Give your guy a manicure or here’s how to plan an entire spa night at home.

– Have a real bubbly bath with your sweetie by pouring champagne into the tub.  Set the scene with candles, music, snacks and cocktails

– Set up side by side yoga mats and try poses from the book Lovers Yoga

Happy Valentine’s Day and See You at the Spa, Candy

Superbowl Spa His Point of View

8 Feb

As attested to in this article on about.com, football is a dangerous sport.

Whether your team won or lost the BIG game one thing is certain, the players are going to be sore! And this Apres Superbowl Monday has me thinking how some spa time would be, well super, for these footballers. Think these men are too macho for spa? Since most teams have physical therapists and massage therapists on staff I doubt it.

Here’s my prescription for an NFL Player’s Post SuperBowl Spa Day:

Second String Steam – start off with a long relax in the sauna or steamroom to loosen up those muscles

Field-Goal Yoga class to lengthen all those crunched up muscles and tendons

Tackle that Body Scrub – to get the dirt out of those pores

Touchdown Deep Tissue Sports Massage – to release the rest of the toxins & stress of the big game

Punter’s Pedicure – focusing on acupressure on those feet and ankles to get all limbered up for next season

Wide Receiver Man-icure – Glycolic acid with extra exfoliating to get rid of those football catching induced callouses

Anyone know any NFL execs? Feel free to pass along my recommendations. . . have other ideas for football spa treats ….let’s hear them below in the comments.

See you at the spa, Candy
