The Origins of My Idea
Who hasn’t thought about what it would be like to travel around the world? Such an undertaking seems the territory of hearty backpackers and rugged athletic types. But me? More than 100 miles away from the nearest Sephora and I panic.
Though I’ve been to 90 spas as a spa consultant and author, I always imagined taking a tour of the world’s top spas. Because such an undertaking could take a lifetime and a fortune (with the thousands of fantastic spas the world over), I turned to one of my favorite authors to inspire my route and timeframe.
My journey will mimick Phileas Fogg’s in Around the World in Eighty Days with a glamorous twist – visiting the world’s best spas in 80 days – with an eye to actually make the trip to benefit Spa4Diabetes. Then that 20,000 pound wager could really come in handy ; ).
If you’re not familiar with the book, this Jules Verne classic is set in 1872 and can be summarized by the following: “After making an audacious wager, the wealthy and eccentric Phileas Fogg attempts a seemingly impossible feat – to circumnavigate the globe in eighty days.”
Besides just being a humorous read, the book inspired me as I relate to both the main character (a ne’er do well type who is always inventing and having the world laugh at him) and Jules himself whose life bears some resemblance to my own (you can read more if you like in the About Me section of the site.)
Just for fun at the top of each post I will include a quote from the book. If you’d like to read the entire book online, click here to do just that.
Come join me – we depart September 25, 2008. To make our journey really relaxing, the spas have provided amenities, menus, photos and treatments. Watch for updates finalizing transportation, luggage, etc. – details that can help you plan your own SRTW trip.

See you at the Spa, Candy
